San Juan: 40 Minutes and a World of Connections
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan is the Caribbean's busiest airport and one of the most important aviation hubs in the Western Hemisphere. For St. Croix travelers, SJU is just a 40-minute Cape Air or Silver Airways flight away — and from there, you can reach virtually anywhere in the US, Latin America, or Europe.
STX to SJU: The Details
Cape Air and Silver Airways both operate multiple daily flights between STX and SJU. The flight is short enough that some days you could fly to San Juan for a meeting and be back in St. Croix for dinner. Fares typically run $60–120 each way depending on timing and advance booking.
San Juan as a Destination
San Juan itself is worth more than a quick layover. Old San Juan — the cobblestone historic district — is one of the most beautiful places in the Caribbean. El Morro fortress, the colorful colonial streets, Condado beach, and some of the best restaurants in the region make SJU a legitimate destination, not just a connection point.
Using SJU for Onward Connections
From SJU you can reach:
- All major US cities on American, United, Delta, JetBlue, and Southwest
- International destinations including London, Madrid, Frankfurt, and Toronto
- Other Caribbean islands including Barbados, Aruba, and the Dominican Republic
Connection Time at SJU
Allow at least 90 minutes at SJU between your Cape Air or Silver segment and a mainline departure. The commuter terminal is separate from the main international terminal — factor in the transfer. See our full SJU connection guide for details.
