St. Croix is a different kind of USVI island. At 84 square miles — the largest in the US Virgin Islands — it's more spread out, more rural, and more rewarding to explore independently. Taxis work for getting from the airport to your hotel, but they won't get you to Cane Bay at sunrise, Point Udall at sunset, the rain forest in the middle, or the quiet beaches of the East End.

🛣️ Driving on St. Croix
St. Croix driving is manageable — flatter and less mountainous than St. Thomas — but there are still important things to know before you put it in drive.
⬅️ Drive on the LEFT
The single most important thing. Left side of the road, always. The steering wheel is on the left (American style) but you drive on the left lane. At every turn, remind yourself: left side. It becomes natural quickly.
🛣️ The Cross-Island Highway
Melvin Evans Highway (Route 66) runs east-west across the island and is your main artery. Well-paved and straightforward. Connects the airport to both Christiansted and Frederiksted.
🌿 Centerline Road
Route 70 (Centerline Road) cuts through the middle of the island and the rain forest. Narrower and windier than the highway — gorgeous but requires attention. Worth the drive.
🏖️ East End Roads
Route 82 runs to Point Udall — the easternmost point in the US. Roads get narrow and some beach access paths are unpaved. This is where the Jeep earns its keep.
🌧️ Wet Roads
After rain, roads can be slippery, especially on hills and unpaved routes. Slow down significantly. Some beach access paths become impassable after heavy rain — check conditions.
🐐 Watch for Animals
Goats, chickens, iguanas, and donkeys wander onto roads in the USVI. Drive slowly in rural areas. Iguanas are especially common on the East End — they move slowly and freeze in road.

Parking in Christiansted is limited downtown but manageable. Frederiksted has more open space. Most beach areas have informal lots — arrive early on weekends. Never block private driveways.

Book well in advance during peak season. December through April is peak season — Jeeps and SUVs sell out weeks ahead. Book the moment your flights are confirmed, especially around Christmas, New Year's, and spring break.
