Why San Juan Is Your Gateway to St. Croix
Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) in San Juan, Puerto Rico is the Caribbean's largest aviation hub — and for most travelers flying to St. Croix without a direct mainland connection, it's the key transfer point. Cape Air and Silver Airways both connect SJU to STX daily, making San Juan the natural midpoint for mainland-to-STX itineraries.
How the Connection Works
You'll fly from your home city to San Juan on a major carrier (American, United, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest), then connect to either Cape Air or Silver Airways for the final 40-minute hop to STX. Total travel time varies by origin, but most mainland-to-STX trips run 6–10 hours door-to-door.
How Much Layover Time Do You Need?
Build in at least 90 minutes at SJU minimum — 2 hours is better. Here's why: Cape Air and Silver Airways often operate from a separate commuter terminal (Terminal C or the FBO area), which requires a terminal transfer from the main international gates. Factor in deplaning, the transfer, and re-clearing security if needed.
If your mainline flight is delayed and you miss your inter-island connection, the next Cape Air or Silver departure may be several hours away. Travel insurance is worth considering for this reason.
Through-Ticketing vs. Separate Tickets
Cape Air has interline agreements with American Airlines, meaning you can book a through-ticket from the mainland to STX via SJU. This protects you if the mainline segment is delayed — American will rebook your Cape Air connection at no charge. Booking separate tickets is cheaper but leaves you unprotected if flights go off-schedule.
SJU Airport Tips
- Baggage claim at SJU can be slow — build this into your connection time estimate.
- The commuter terminal for Cape Air is a short walk or shuttle from the main terminal. Ask at the information desk if you're unsure.
- There are good dining options in the main terminal if you have a longer layover. The commuter terminal is much more basic.
- SJU is in the Atlantic Standard Time zone (same as STX) — no time zone adjustment needed.
Overnight in San Juan?
If you have a very long layover or a late arrival in SJU, Old San Juan is worth exploring — it's a 15-minute taxi from the airport and one of the most beautiful historic cities in the Caribbean. Hotels near the airport are plentiful for an overnight stop.
