TSA at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport
Henry E. Rohlsen Airport has a single TSA security checkpoint handling all departing flights. The checkpoint is relatively small by mainland standards, but it serves a mix of inter-island turboprops and occasional mainline jets — which means volume varies significantly throughout the day.
When to Arrive
The standard advice applies: arrive 2 hours before mainline departures, 45–60 minutes before inter-island Cape Air or Silver Airways flights. The airport is small enough that you won't need two hours to navigate it — but security backups during peak morning departure windows are real and worth accounting for.
Peak departure times at STX tend to be early morning (6–9 AM) when multiple Cape Air and Silver flights stack up. If you're on one of these, be there early.
TSA PreCheck at STX
TSA PreCheck is available at STX. If you have PreCheck, look for the dedicated lane — it moves significantly faster during busy periods. The STX checkpoint isn't enormous, so PreCheck advantage is most noticeable during the morning rush.
What You Can Bring — Island-Specific Notes
- Rum: You can bring rum in checked baggage (up to 5L per person for bottles between 24–70% ABV). In carry-on, the standard 3.4oz / 100ml liquid rule applies. St. Croix rum is worth bringing home — just pack it properly in checked bags.
- Fresh fruit and plants: USDA agricultural restrictions apply. Certain fruits and plants cannot be transported from the USVI to the mainland. When in doubt, leave it behind or declare it.
- Duty-free purchases: Liquids purchased at the terminal or duty-free must still comply with TSA liquid rules for carry-on. For direct mainland flights, sealed duty-free bags are typically allowed through.

The staff know the airport, the lines move at a human pace, and the whole process rarely takes more than 20–30 minutes outside of peak times. Arrive on time, have your ID and boarding pass ready, and you'll be through without stress.
