The STX–Miami Corridor
Miami International Airport (MIA) is the most natural mainland connection for St. Croix travelers. American Airlines operates the most frequency on this corridor, with nonstop service during peak season and year-round connectivity through San Juan. MIA is also a major international gateway, making it ideal if you're continuing onward to Latin America, Europe, or beyond.
How to Get from STX to Miami
During peak season (December–April), American Airlines runs nonstop service from STX directly to MIA — the easiest option. The flight takes about 2.5 hours. Year-round, the routing is STX → SJU on Cape Air or Silver Airways, then SJU → MIA on American or another carrier. Total travel time is typically 5–7 hours.
MIA Airport Tips for Caribbean Travelers
Miami International is large and can be chaotic during peak periods. A few things to know:
- American Airlines dominates MIA — if you're connecting here on AA, your gates will likely be in the North or Central terminals.
- International arrivals require clearing US Customs and Immigration, which can add 45–90 minutes. If you're arriving from the USVI (a US territory), you do not clear international customs — you arrive domestically.
- MIA has excellent dining in most concourses. If you have a layover, Concourse D and E have the best options.
- The MIA Marriott is connected directly to the terminal for overnight layovers.
Best Time to Fly STX–MIA
Morning departures from STX give you the best chance of making onward connections if there are delays. Afternoon and evening STX departures can create tight connections in Miami during thunderstorm season (June–September) when MIA weather delays are common.
Driving from Miami After Landing
If Miami is your final destination, rental cars are available at the airport and Brightline train service connects MIA to Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and Orlando — a convenient option for avoiding I-95 traffic.
