Welcome to St. Croix

Landing at Henry E. Rohlsen Airport for the first time is an exciting moment — but the USVI's largest island has a few quirks that catch first-timers off guard. This guide covers everything from the moment your wheels touch down to when you're settled at your hotel.

Know Which Town You're Staying In

This is the most important thing first-time visitors need to know: St. Croix has two main towns — Christiansted on the east end (closer to the airport, about 15 minutes) and Frederiksted on the west end (about 25 minutes). They are 28 miles apart. Before you get in a taxi, know which one — or which resort — you're heading to. Telling the driver "take me to my hotel" without knowing the area leads to confusion.

No Uber or Lyft

The USVI does not permit rideshare services. Your options from the airport are taxis (shared safari vans with per-person rates), rental cars (all major agencies at the terminal), or hotel shuttles. Taxis queue directly outside the terminal exit — the drivers will approach you. State your destination clearly.

Drive on the Left

If you're renting a car — and we recommend it for stays of 3+ nights — remember that the USVI drives on the left side of the road. The steering wheel is on the left (American style), but you drive in the left lane. It takes about 10–15 minutes to feel natural. Take your time leaving the parking lot.

The Island Is Bigger Than You Think

St. Croix is 84 square miles — the largest island in the US Virgin Islands. It takes about 45 minutes to drive across the island. Budget accordingly for getting around, and consider renting a car if you want to explore Cane Bay, the rain forest, Point Udall, or both towns freely.

Your First Night

After the travel day, keep your first night simple. Christiansted has the best restaurant density — a waterfront dinner on King Street is a perfect introduction to the island. Save the big exploration for day two when you're fresh and oriented.
